As a steering committee member and classroom teacher, Penny Keith participated in the first public school Community of Caring pilot program in 1986 and was actively involved in school-wide program implementation and a three-year evaluation comparison study. She has 30 years of experience as a teacher with a Master of Science in Education and Secondary Administration and a Bachelor of Arts, K-12 Health, Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education. She brings to her current position 20 plus years of experience and knowledge in developing, implementing, and mentoring schools in the Community of Caring process. She currently serves as the Professional Development/Grants Coordinator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center for Community of Caring.
She has facilitated and served as the project director on a number of grants specifically designed to implement the Community of Caring program values and components: Learn and Serve America, Missouri Department of Health - Title V Abstinence-Only, DOE -Peer-Mentoring and ADD -Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.
Penny has served on the Community of Caring National Advisory Board and facilitated numerous professional development workshops as well as keynotes and breakouts at a variety of conferences across the United States. She was the recipient of The Outstanding Community of Caring Lead Teacher and has co-authored with Kristin Fink an article entitled "Community of Caring Friendship Project," published in the TASH Connection issue entitled The Anatomy of Friendships, January/February 2004.
